The stage of the Chamäleon belongs to New Circus!
With several guest performances and special events per year, we would like to represent the entire range of contemporary circus art. On our stage you will find the vanguard of the international circus scene, such as Cirk La Putyka from the Czech Republic, Circo Aereo from Finland, Circa or Gravity & Other Myths from Australia. Special formats such as our guest perfor-mance series Play give the independent scene, newcomers and classics alike, a platform. Every season, we offer evenings with accompanying translation into German sign language and supporting programs such as introductions or audience discussions.
New or contemporary circus focuses on acrobatics, which, depending on the piece, is combined with other art forms such as dance, song or video art. Each piece has a basic idea, which is reflected in the direction, design and presentation. The artists work as an ensemble and not as a series of individual performances, familiar from classical circus or variety shows.
The Chamäleon Theater is located in the historic Hackesche Höfe, the largest connected courtyard area in Germany. The theater hall is a former ballroom in the Art Nouveau style, which largely preserves the splendor of bygone days. The whole complex, including our theater, is a listed landmark. In addition to cultural institutions, stylish stores, local manufacturers and owner-operated restaurants are located in the complex, all of which are well worth seeing.
